Model UN Conference held at the Youth Environmental Centre

On 26-27 March, the XXIII St. Petersburg International Model UN Conference was held in 56, Shpalernaya st.

For several years running, this conference has been hosted by Vodokanal. It is a combination of a scientific conference and a role play where college students and high-schoolers imitate the work of the UN bodies, acquire diplomatic, leadership, oratorial and language skills, and learn to come to a compromise.

The conference was attended by 350 delegates from 13 countries: Russia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Denmark, Ethiopia, the Czech Republic, Cuba, Saudi Arabia and others. The target was to impart a sense of responsibility for the future of humanity to the young people and develop international interaction skills.

A meeting of two city administration committees - the Committee for External Relations and the Committee for Nature Use, Environmental Protection an Ecological Safety - was hosted by the Youth Environmental Center.

During the debates, the kids discussed current environmental problems, anthropogenic pressure on the Baltic Sea, etc. In particular, they talked about the consequences of globalization which carries great risks for the environment. As a follow up of the committees meeting, resolutions were drawn up and approved for further submittal to the final plenary session of the UN Youth General Assembly.

After the conference, an excursion to the Universe of Water, the multimedia demonstration and exhibition complex, was organized for the young people.
